SIERRA CLUB
Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul alike.
-- John Muir, Sierra Club Founder

The Sierra Club – A Conservation Legacy

The Sierra Club has been in the business of protecting people and the planet for over 100 years.  Today, with more than 750,000 members, the Sierra Club is America’s oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization.  Inspired by nature, we work with our neighbors to protect our communities and to leave our children a healthy, living legacy of clean air, clean water and natural grandeur. Working to stop global warming is one of the key priorities of the Sierra Club.

Sierra Club Mission Statement

1. Explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth.
2. Practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources.
3. Educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment.
4. Use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.

Global Warming

After years of debate, a near consensus among the world's scientists has concluded that we are warming the planet, and unless we take steps now to curb global warming, our way of life, our planet, and our children are all in grave danger. Recognizing that each of us can make simple decisions that will reduce global warming pollution, the Sierra Club's network of activists and volunteers are dedicated to curbing global warming. We are working with churches, labor unions, mayors and state governments to bring about a cleaner, smarter energy future.

For example, all over America, cities, counties and states are launching an exciting grassroots movement to help solve one of our country’s most pressing problems: global warming. Frustrated by stalling on the federal level, local leaders are moving forward with innovative energy solutions that cut our dependence on oil, benefit public health and save taxpayer dollars. These mayors, county commissioners and governors are leading the way toward a safer and more secure future.

Faith Partnerships at the Sierra Club

As the threats to our health and heritage have increased in recent years, people of faith have been responding like never before.  Religious leaders and local congregations have been engaging in the public dialogue on issues from global climate change to species extinction to pollution’s disproportionate impact on poor.  “Creation Care” groups have formed in local churches and synagogues, and national leaders are speaking out about stewardship of the planet and irresponsible government policies that threaten the health of future generations.

Through the Environmental Partnerships Program, Sierra Club empowers the 47% of Sierra Club members who regularly attend religious services to partner with their local faith communities to educate the public about solutions to America’s environmental challenges.  Moved by a common sense of values, these neighbors work together to clean up streams, install energy efficient technologies in their houses of worship and promote the use of hybrid vehicles.
